Streptococcus Mutans in Caries-free and Caries -active Subjects in P Anggang Island Indonesia

Streptococcus mutans present in a man on a world wide basis (Birgitta Kohler & Douglas Bratthall 1976). High numbers in the mouth of Streptococcus mutans are associated with both high prevalence and a high incidence of dental caries. The Directorate of Oral Health Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia declared 60 80 percent of school children between 4 14 years by age were suffering from dental caries. However the harbouring a wide range of bacterium in the plaque in relation to caries prevalence and the relationship of Streptococcus mutans to trends in caries development in population is not really well known. The purpose of the study is to identify the oral distribution of Streptococcus mutans in caries free and caries-active in the people of Panggang Island Indonesia, where the geographic area of prevalence has not been identified.
